The diversity of teleost fishes during the terminal Cretaceous and the consequences of the K/Pg boundary extinction event

The Late Cretaceous was a time of blossoming teleost diversification that came to a sudden restriction and partial termination during the extinction event at the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K/Pg) boundary. Among the dominant and diverse Late Cretaceous teleost groups prior to the K/Pg boundary event were certain pelagic Aulopiformes (e.g., Ichthyotringoidei and Enchodontoidei) and a large variety of basal Acanthomorpha whose relationships are difficult to determine. The skeletal record diminishes during the late Campanian and is low in the Maastrichtian and Paleocene, constituting the so-called ‘Patterson’s Gap’. Recent studies of fossil otoliths, however, have significantly increased the number of taxa recognised for this time inerval, but most of the putative extinct forms lack adequate calibration with otoliths found in situ in articulated skeletons. However, the otolith assemblages do confirm the presence of great morphological diversity among Aulopiformes and Acanthomorpha incertae sedis that became extinct at the K/Pg boundary. In the present review, we elucidate the effect of the K/Pg boundary from an otolith perspective and categorise extinct lineages and survivors. It is interesting to recognise that several of the surviving lineages are represented by groups that probably originated during the Late Cretaceous but were not particularly common up to the K/Pg boundary and began to expand rapidly and diversify during the early Paleogene. Such lineages probably took advantage to populate void ecospace that may have opened following the extirpation of previously dominant lineages. During the early Paleogene, the otolith record shows that the Ophidiiformes and perciforms s. lat. were the ones that diversified the most rapidly and became the most abundant, and in certain areas associated with the Gadiformes.
Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti) Interference and Seed Production in Corn Silage and Grain

Studies were conducted during a 2-yr period measuring corn silage and grain yield and velvetleaf seed production in response to velvetleaf density. Velvetleaf densities of 0, 2, 5, 10, and 21 plants/m2 were established in conventionally tilled corn. The percent corn yield reduction in response to velvetleaf density was similar for both years despite differences in total corn yield. Corn grain and silage yield responded differently to velvetleaf interference. Although both were adversely affected, silage yield reductions were twice that of grain at the low velvetleaf densities. A hyperbolic yield model predicted a maximum yield loss for corn silage and grain of 36 and 37% with incremental losses of 7 and 3%, respectively, as velvetleaf density increased. Velvetleaf seed production ranged from 2,256 to 4,844 seed/m2 from the lowest to the highest density. This study demonstrates that corn silage yield is more sensitive than corn grain yield to velvetleaf interference, as well as how crop value plays an important role in determining economic thresholds. Finally, this research confirms the prolific nature of velvetleaf and shows that even at low densities, velvetleaf seed production could affect weed control decisions for many seasons to come.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
Arid and semi-arid climates are mainly characterised as those areas where precipitation is less (and often considerably less) than potential evapotranspiration. These climate regions are ideal environments for salt to accumulate in natural soil and groundwater settings since evaporation and transpiration essentially remove freshwater from the system, leaving residual salts behind. Similarly, the characteristically low precipitation rates reduce the potential for salt to be diluted by rainfall. Thus arid and semi-arid regions make ideal ‘salt concentrator’ hydrologic environments. Indeed, salt flats, playas, sabkhas and saline lakes, for example, are ubiquitous features of arid and semi-arid regions throughout the world (Yechieli and Wood,2002). In such settings, variable density flow phenomena are expected to be important, especially where hypersaline brines overlie less dense groundwater at depth. In contrast, seawater intrusion in coastal aquifers is a global phenomenon that is not constrained to only arid and semi-arid regions of the globe and is inherently a variable density flow problem by its very nature. These two examples make it clear that variable density flow problems occur in, but importantly extend beyond, arid and semi-arid regions of the globe. The intention of this chapter is therefore not to limit ourselves to modelling arid zone hydrological systems, but rather to present a more general treatment of variable density groundwater flow and solute transport phenomena and modelling. The concepts presented in this chapter are therefore not climatologically constrained to arid or semi-arid zones of the world, although they do apply equally there.

Controlled parallel experiments were performed on the Vienna test model for the evaluation of procedures for hygienic hand-disinfection in three laboratories (Vienna, Mainz, Birmingham). The degerming activity of four procedures, each taking 1 min, was assessed repeatedly and compared with that of a standard disinfection procedure (ST) using isopropanol 60 % (v/v). The mean log reductions (mean log RF) for each procedure were as follows: n−propanol 50% (v/v) 4·85 and 5·14 in Vienna (V) and Mainz (M) respectively, ethanol 70 % (v/v) + chlorhexidinegluconate 0·5% (w/v), 4·01 (V), 3·76 (M) and 4·00 in Birmingham (B). Washing procedures were less effective, mean log RF 's of 3·19 (V), 3·49 (M) and 3·04 (B) were obtained with povidone-iodine soap, and 2·91 (V), 3·37 (M) and 3·27 (B) with a liquid phenolic soap. Analysis of variance on the data from Vienna and Mainz revealed significant differences of means not only between procedures (‘preparations’) but also on repeat testing. To compensate for the influence of variables such as test subjects, laboratory and day, the Vienna test model provides a method of standardization by testing a ST in parallel with the test procedure (P).
Standardization of the results was obtained by pair-wise substraction, log . Analysis of variance on the resulting values demonstrated that comparability of the results between laboratories and on repeat testing was achieved. The relative variation of the measurements within the laboratories ranged from 0·9 to 4·2%. As assessed by power-analysis, a disinfection procedure will be detected as significantly (P= 0·1) inferior to the standard processes in 95 of 100 experiments if it produces a mean log RF that is at least 0·55–0·65 log units smaller than that of the standard.

To address some concerns about the expansion of genetically engineered pharmaceutical and industrial crops to outdoor plantings and potential impacts on the human food supply, we determined whether commercial agriculture seeds of maize or corn Zea mays L., barley Hordeum vulgare L., safflower Carthamus tinctorius L. and rice Oryza sativa L. are digested or pass viably through the digestive tract, or are transported externally, by captive mallard ducks Anas platyrhynchos L., ring-necked pheasants Phasianus colchicus L., red-winged blackbirds Agelaius phoeniceus (L.) and rock pigeons Columba livia Gmelin (with the exception of whole maize seeds which were too large to feed to the blackbirds). These crop seeds, whether free-fed or force-fed, did not pass through the digestive tract of these bird species. The birds nonetheless did retain viable seeds in the esophagus/crop and gizzard for several hours. For example, after foraging for 6 h, mallards had retained an average of 228 ± 112 barley seeds and pheasants 192 ± 78 in the esophagus/crop, and their germination rates were 93 and 50%, respectively. Birds externally transported seeds away from the feeding location, but in only four instances were seeds found attached to their muddy feet or legs and in no case to feathers. Risk of such crop seeds germinating, establishing and reproducing off site after transport by a bird (externally or internally) or movement of a carcass by a predator, will depend greatly on the crop and bird species, location, environmental conditions (including soil characteristics), timing, and seed condition.

We describe the production of hierarchical branched nanowire structures by the sequential seeding of multiple wire generations with metal nanoparticles. Such complex structures represent the next step in the study of functional nanowires, as they increase the potential functionality of nanostructures produced in a self-assembled way. It is possible, for example, to fabricate a variety of active heterostructure segments with different compositions and diameters within a single connected structure. The focus of this work is on epitaxial III-V semiconductor branched nanowire structures, with the two materials GaP and In As used as typical examples of branched structures with cubic (zinc blende) and hexagonal (wurtzite) crystal structures. The general morphology of these structures will be described, as well as the relationship between morphology and crystal structure.

Introduction: The illnesses of celebrity patients always receive more attention from the general public than those of ordinary patients. With regard to cancer, this fact has helped to spread information about the four major malignancies: breast cancer, prostatic cancer, lung cancer and colorectal cancer. Head and neck cancer, on the other hand, is still not well recognised by the lay public, although the risk factors are similar to those of lung cancer. It was the objective of this analysis to identify cases of celebrity patients, the description of which could help to increase awareness of head and neck cancer, its symptoms and risk factors.
Methods: The Internet and medical literature databases were searched for celebrity patients who had suffered from head and neck cancer.
Results: The search revealed numerous famous head and neck cancer patients. However, only seven cases were documented well in the medical literature. Among the identified persons were one emperor, two United States presidents, a legendary composer, a world-renowned medical doctor, an outstanding athlete and an extraordinary entertainer. In spite of their exclusive position in society, these patients did not have a better prognosis compared with ordinary patients of their time. Only two of the group experienced long term survival and only one was cured. None of these influential figures used their influence to fund research or to promote knowledge about their respective diseases.
Conclusion: The identified cases could help increase public awareness of head and neck cancer. Similar to activities in other oncologic fields, current celebrity head and neck cancer patients should be encouraged to discuss their diseases openly, which could have a positive effect on public health.

The measurements were done with synchrotron radiation using different diffraction geometries. Data evaluation was based on comparison with simulated distributions of x-ray diffuse scattering. For the samples under consideration ((001) surface) there is no difference in dot extension along [110] and [-110] and no directional ordering. The measurements easily allow the determination of the average indium amount in the wetting layers. Data evaluation by simulation of x-ray diffuse scattering gives an increase of Incontent from the dot bottom to the dot top.

The determination of effective temperatures of very hot central stars (Teff > 70 000 K) by model atmosphere analyses of optical H and He line profiles is afflicted with considerable uncertainty, primarily due to the lack of neutral helium lines. Ionization balances of metals, accessible only with UV lines, allow more precise temperature estimates. The potential of iron lines is pointed out. At the same time iron and other metal abundances, hardly investigated until today, may be derived from UV spectra. We describe recent HST spectroscopy performed for this purpose.
A search for iron lines in FUV spectra of the hottest H-deficient central stars (PG1159-type, Teff >100000 K) taken with FUSE was unsuccessful. The derived deficiency is interpreted in terms of iron depletion due to n-capture nucleosynthesis in intershell matter, which is now exposed at the stellar surface as a consequence of a late He shell flash.
Airborne observations of far-infrared emission lines from the photodissociation regions in Planetary Nebulae: Properties and masses of the neutral components

Measurements of the main far-infrared cooling lines from photodissociation regions in planetary nebulae were obtained with NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory, using a moderate-resolution far-infrared cooled grating spectrometer (Erickson et al. 1985). We surveyed about 20 nebulae in the [O I] 63 μm line, and detected it in most of the observed objects. We found that its strength correlates well with the total far-infrared power, with an average ratio of about 0.2%, as predicted by models of photodissociation regions (e.g. Tielens & Hollenbach 1985; Wolfire et al. 1990). Strong 63 μm emission is absent only for objects in which the ionization of the gas is just beginning and for a few evolved objects where the ionized nebula is probably matter-bounded.

Much interest in the area of ferroelectric thin films has been generated by the recent developments in unique property observation for these materials. As deposition methods move toward potential commercialization, the importance of chemically and thermally stable at use temperature, high vapor pressure and purity, readily available and economically competitive sources for the requisite group 2 elements will emerge. This presentation entails an initial overview of the presently utilized compounds, their advantages and disadvantages. New group 2 CVD precursors have been developed based both on inter- and intramolecular stabilization of cyclopentadienides, alkoxides and β-diketonates. Recent results on the coordination environment around the central metal atom have offered insight into the next generation of polydentate, monoanionic ligand design. Specific details are discussed for the metal complexes of “scorpion-tail” β-diketoethers. Results of comparison studies between these new precursors and earlier compounds are presented as a model for designing future sources.
N/O Abundances in Planetary Nebulae from Far-Infrared Line Observations

Measurements of the [O III] 52, 88 μm and [N III] 57 μm fine-structure emission lines have been obtained for nine planetary nebulae, using the facility far-infrared array spectrometer on NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. The N++/O++ ratios determined from these observations range by more than an order of magnitude among the sample. Using recent improved values for the atomic parameters, we find that the N++/O++ ratios agree fairly well with values of N+/O+ determined from optical lines in the same objects. The highest N++/O++ values, found for the extreme “Type I” nebulae NGC 2440 and NGC 6302, are approximately unity. These results imply that the synthesis and mixing of nitrogen must be extremely efficient in the progenitor stars of some planetary nebulae, and that these nebulae are significant sources of nitrogen to the interstellar medium. The local electron densities derived from the intensity ratios of the two [O III] lines are generally lower than values in the literature determined from small-beam optical observations of other ions, such as [O II]. This effect can be understood in terms of the presence of clumpy structure in the nebula, since the far-infrared lines have fairly low critical densities for collisional de-excitation and therefore are preferentially emitted from low-density gas.

Consider the following result.
PROPOSITION. Let D be a finite-dimensional central division algebra over a field F, and let Dn be the algebra (over F) of all n × n matrices with entries in D. Let A and B be in Dn, and suppose that BX = XB for every X in Dn such that XA = AX. Then B is a polynomial in A with coefficients in F.
The case D = F is a well-known classical result. Recently, the particular case where D is the algebra of real quaternions was established by Cullen and Carlson (2). In this note, the general proposition is proved by reduction to the classical case by way of tensor products.
